Pedro Strop looking to get back on track; Mitchell Boggs continues to implode

April 22, 2013

Baltimore Orioles – Nearly all season, Darren O’Day has served as the 8th inning man for the Orioles.  Pedro Strop was the go-to set-up man for Baltimore last year, but has struggled out of the box this year, having posted a 9.45 ERA through the season’s first three weeks.  He pitched yesterday in the 7th inning of a game the Orioles were losing, and will need to get back on track before he’s used in high-leverage situations again.  Hierarchy change: Darren O’Day to Set-up, Pedro Strop to 2nd in line.

Miami Marlins – Jon Rauch faced six batters on Sunday and five of them reached base, and when the dust cleared, the Reds had plated eight runs in the inning and Rauch’s ERA had ballooned to 9.45.  Until he figures it out, the Marlins are unlikely to go to Rauch in high-leverage spots.  That duty will likely fall to AJ Ramos or Chad Qualls, the former of which has 16 Ks in 11.2 innings pitched thus far.  Hierarchy change: AJ Ramos to 2nd in line, replacing Jon Rauch.

Texas Rangers – Michael Kirkman picked up a 3-inning save in a blowout on Sunday.  He does not figure in to the normal late-inning hierarchy in Texas.  No hierarchy change.

St. Louis Cardinals – Mitchell Boggs’s nightmare season continued on Sunday, as he was summoned in a tie game in the 8th inning, and allowed four runs while only recording one out.  With an ERA that now stands at 12.46, he’s got a long way to go before he returns to any kind of substantial role in the Cardinals bullpen.  Trevor Rosenthal will be the guy to set up Edward Mujica for the time being.  Hierarchy change: Trevor Rosenthal to Set-up, Mitchell Boggs to 2nd in line.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
1. Koji Uehara, Boston Red Sox – Andrew Bailey has pitched on two straight days and on four of the last five.
2. Carlos Marmol, Chicago Cubs – James Russell pitched in the 7th inning of a game the Cubs were losing Sunday. As we’ve stated before, he is the best reliever in the Cubs bullpen, and it isn’t even close; however, it might be Carlos Marmol who is summoned in an upcoming save situation.

Josh Kinney, Junichi Tazawa ascending

September 23, 2012

Boston Red Sox – Junichi Tazawa pitched the 9th inning in a tie game on Saturday.  He’s been the most reliable Boston reliever over the last few weeks, including Andrew Bailey, and has earned the trust of Bobby Valentine.  Hierarchy change: Junichi Tazawa to Set-up, Vicente Padilla to 2nd in line.

New York Mets – Jon Rauch picked up a save on Saturday.  Frank Francisco was reportedly available, but the Mets left Rauch in even after he allowed a HR.  Francisco remains on the Hot Seat, which has basically been a second home for the Mets closer this year, but he hasn’t lost the job yet, as the Mets were probably just giving him an extra day to recover from a nagging injury that kept him out of a few games earlier this week.  No hierarchy change.

Seattle Mariners – Josh Kinney pitched the 8th inning ahead of Tom Wilhelmsen on Saturday.  Charlie Furbush, one of the most consistent relievers in the Seattle bullpen earlier this year, hasn’t seen much action as of late.  Hierarchy change: Josh Kinney to Set-up, Charlie Furbush to 2nd in line.

Kansas City Royals – As predicted in yesterday’s Vulture Save Watch, Kelvin Herrera got the save for the Royals on Saturday.  Greg Holland had pitched in three straight and got the night off.  No hierarchy change.

3. Javier Lopez, San Francisco Giants – Javier Lopez and Sergio Romo continue to share the 9th inning role for the Giants.

Aumont takes over the 8th in Philly

September 14, 2012

Philadelphia Phillies – The Phillies went back to Phillippe Aumont yet again in a close 8th inning, this time after Antonio Bastardo had already pitched the 7th. Although Aumont struggled with his control and was tagged with the loss, all three runs were scored after he was relieved with two outs in favor of lefty Jake Diekman. All signs point to Aumont’s ascension in the Philadelphia pen. Hierarchy change: Phillippe Aumont to Set-up, Antonio Bastardo to 2nd in line.

Texas Rangers – On his third straight night of work, Joe Nathan was horrid, giving up three runs on four hits and blowing the save before being replaced by Koji Uehara. Nathan’s team-record 31 straight converted save chances have earned him some good will.  No hierarchy change.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
1. Mike Adams, Texas Rangers – As noted, Joe Nathan has pitched in three straight games for the Rangers, culminating in a blown save on Thursday night.
2. Pedro Strop, Baltimore Orioles – Jim Johnson has thrown over 20 pitches on two straight days and Strop got last night off.

Joba Chamberlain solid in his second 2012 appearance in the bigs

August 7, 2012

New York Yankees – On Monday, in his second big-league appearance of the year, Joba Chamberlain pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.  Chamberlain was dominant in his rehab outings, logging a 0.96 ERA, 10 Ks and only 1 BB.  Once he gets his feet under him in the big leagues, the Yankees are certain to use him in some high-leverage late-inning spots.  Hierarchy change: Joba Chamberlain to 2nd in line, replacing Boone Logan.

1. Pedro Strop, Baltimore Orioles – Jim Johnson has pitched in three straight.
2. Jared Burton, Minnesota Twins – The Twins are employing a committee, and while Glen Perkins remains the best bet for saves overall, Jared Burton could get an opportunity whenever match-ups are right.

Kevin Jepsen runs scoreless streak to 11 straight outings

July 28, 2012

Los Angeles Angels – Hard-throwing righty Kevin Jepsen pitched the 7th inning last night, and he now has three holds and win this week, all pitching in the 7th inning or later.  Jepsen has not allowed a single run since returning from the minors, a span of 11 appearances.  Hierarchy change: Kevin Jepsen to 2nd in line, replacing LaTroy Hawkins.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
1. Mitchell Boggs, St. Louis Cardinals – Jason Motte has pitched in three straight games, throwing 4 innings in the process.
2. Jason Grilli, Pittsburgh Pirates – Joel Hanrahan has pitched in three straight.
3. Pedro Strop, Baltimore Orioles – Jim Johnson had a brutal outing yesterday, giving up 6 ERs while only recording one out.  His job is not in jeopardy, but he’s pitched two days in a row, throwing 42 pitches, and could be given the day off today.
4. Mike Dunn, Miami Marlins – The Marlins are employing a closer-by-committee and thus far, Steve Cishek has picked up two saves to Mike Dunn’s one.  Cishek is still the best bet for a save on any given night, but Dunn could get the call if the Marlins are facing a lefty-heavy 9th inning.
5. Jared Burton, Minnesota Twins – The Twins are employing a committee, and while Glen Perkins remains the best bet for saves, Jared Burton could get an opportunity whenever the Twins are facing a righty-heavy lineup.
