Oliver Perez to lead closer-by-committee while Tom Wilhelmsen rights ship

June 15, 2013

Seattle Mariners – Eric Wedge said before Friday’s game that he would give Tom Wilhelmsen some time off from closing.  Oliver Perez was the first reliever to get a save chance in his place (which was a bit of a surprise given his 1.32 WHIP), but the lefty converted, and stands to be in a closer-by-committee with Carter Capps and Charlie Furbush until Wilhelmsen rights his ship.  Wedge’s comments make it sound as if Wilhelmsen will get the job back if he can turn it around, so we recommend hanging on to him for the time being.  Hierarchy change: Oliver Perez to Closer, replacing Tom Wilhelmsen.

Should Jonathan Papelbon be traded, Mike Adams has the edge for saves in Philly

June 14, 2013

Philadelphia Phillies – The Philadelphia bullpen hasn’t been a point of strength this season, and it’s been touch-and-go in terms of getting the ball to Jonathan Papelbon, who until last night didn’t have a single save in June.  After Antonio Bastardo got knocked around on Wednesday, blowing the game in the 7th inning and eventually taking the loss, the Phillies went to Mike Adams in the 8th inning on Thursday.  Adams hasn’t been as good since coming off the disabled list, but after last night, he’s probably moved past Bastardo again on the depth chart.  For speculators, the 8th-inning battle in Philly is worth watching, as Papelbon is a candidate to be dealt some time this summer.  Hierarchy change: Mike Adams to Set-up, Antonio Bastardo to 2nd in line.

Cincinnati Reds – Jonathan Broxton was supposed to have the night off on Thursday, but was pressed into duty when the Reds game stretched into the 14th inning.  He ultimately took the loss, allowing a run on two hits and a walk.  Broxton confirmed after the game that he was hurting a bit, and this wasn’t an issue of overuse — he’d had three days off prior to yesterday.  Broxton’s fastball velocity is down this year, and after last night, his ERA sits at 4.33.  If he’s now dealing with arm trouble, then Sam LeCure could be inheriting the 8th inning role soon.  No hierarchy change.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
1. Ryan Cook/Sean Doolittle, Oakland A’s – Grant Balfour has pitched in three straight.  If he can’t go tonight, Ryan Cook is the best bet for a save opp, though Sean Doolittle could also get a chance if the A’s face a lefty-heavy 9th inning.
2. Francisco Rodriguez, Milwaukee Brewers – K-Rod will continue to steal opportunities from Jim Henderson until he reaches 300 saves for his career.  He’s currently at 298.

Tom Wilhelmsen losing grip on his job; Jose Valverde struggling

June 13, 2013

San Diego Padres – Luke Gregerson put two runners on in the 9th inning last night before being lifted for Tommy Layne.  Nick Vincent eventually got the save.  We’d normally put Gregerson on the Hot Seat after something like this — it certainly doesn’t show a lot of confidence when you pull your would-be closer with 2 outs in the 9th inning when you’re still up by three runs — but Huston Street’s rehab is going fine, and he’s expected back in a couple days.  No hierarchy change.

Detroit Tigers – Jose Valverde blew another save last night, allowing a game-tying home run on an 0-2 pitch with 2 out in the 9th.  His ERA has climbed from 0.75 to 4.15 over the past two weeks, and he’s 3 for 5 in save opportunities in that span.  Meanwhile, set-up man Joaquin Benoit continues to be excellent (1.93 ERA).  Further up in the Detroit bullpen, Drew Smyly’s role has been hard to pin down.  He’s ostensibly the long man — four of his last eight appearances have been for two innings or longer — but he’s also now getting more late-inning work, pitching the 8th inning last night and staying on to face one hitter in the 9th before giving way to Valverde.  Phil Coke, meanwhile, took another loss last night and has an ERA more than double Smyly’s.  Coke’s experience keeps him in the conversation for a vulture save on any night Valverde is unavailable, but over the past few days, Smyly has slid ahead of him.  Hierarchy change: Drew Smyly to 2nd in line, replacing Phil Coke.  Jose Valverde to Hot Seat.

Seattle Mariners – Tom Wilhelmsen blew a save in spectacular fashion on Wednesday night, and Eric Wedge didn’t sound like a man enamored with his stopper.  “We have to talk about it,” he said. “Obviously, you want to do what’s best for the ball club and Tom, too. … Tom Wilhelmsen is still our closer standing here right now.”  Wilhelmsen has now blown four of his last nine save chances.  Carter Capps would be the first choice to replace him if he slips any further.  Tom Wilhelmsen to Hot Seat.

Kenley Jansen earns a save on his first day as Dodgers closer

June 12, 2013

Los Angeles Dodgers — On a tense night that saw five hit batsmen, two bench-clearing brawls, and Mark McGwire’s first ejection in almost 12 years, the Dodgers rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Newly anointed closer Kenley Jansen came out for the save and struck out two in a perfect ninth. Meanwhile, Don Mattingly got to take out some of his frustration on Alan TrammellNo hierarchy change.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
1. Jesse Crain, Chicago White Sox — Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but after a blown save on Tuesday, Addison Reed has now pitched in four straight games. He has thrown 122 pitches over the last seven days. He cannot possibly pitch on Wednesday afternoon. Don’t do it, Robin.
2. Darren O’Day, Baltimore Orioles — Jim Johnson has pitched in three straight.
