Mariano Rivera injured; David Robertson to close

New York Yankees – Mariano Rivera injured his knee shagging fly balls during warmups before a game with Kansas City. The early diagnosis is a sprained knee, and he will have an MRI tonight. David Robertson is likely to step in and take the first save opportunities if Rivera misses time. Rafael Soriano has closing experience and could step in if needed as well. Hierarchy change: Mariano Rivera injured, David Robertson to Closer, Rafael Soriano to Setup, Cory Wade to 2nd in line.

Late inning roles for Miguel Batista, Mitchell Boggs

April 11, 2012

New York Mets- The Mets had an uneventful game, bullpen-wise, on Tuesday.  However, earlier this week, Terry Collins surprisingly indicated that Miguel Batista would be his 9th inning man on any days when Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch are unavailable.  Hierarchy change: Miguel Batista to 2nd in line, replacing Ramon Ramirez.

Milwaukee Brewers- Francisco Rodriguez was called on for the save last night because– as was noted in yesterday’s vulture save watch– John Axford had thrown 53 pitches over the previous two games.  No hierarchy change.

St. Louis Cardinals- Mitchell Boggs pitched two perfect innings of relief on Tuesday and has established himself as a reliable late-inning replacement for the ailing Scott Linebrink.  Hierarchy change: Mitchell Boggs to 2nd in line, replacing Scott Linebrink.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
David Robertson/Rafael Soriano, New York Yankees-  Mariano Rivera has pitched on consecutive days and could get the night off.  David Robertson could get the call, but he has also pitched two days in a row, opening the door for a possible Rafael Soriano save opp.
Henry Rodriguez, Washington Nationals- Davey Johnson is going back and forth between Brad Lidge and Henry Rodriguez, and Lidge pitched last night in a 4-run game.  He didn’t record a save, so it still could be his “turn,” but with Rodriguez idle yesterday, the Nats will probably go with him tonight.

David Robertson setting up; Alexi Ogando’s role

April 7, 2012

New York Yankees- David Robertson’s mild foot injury cost him some work early in spring training, and the Yankees hinted that Rafael Soriano would set up as a result, but Robertson appears to be fine; in their first game, the Yanks went with Soriano in the 7th and Robertson in the 8th.  Hierarchy change: David Robertson to Set-up, Rafael Soriano to 2nd in line.

Texas Rangers- The Rangers, protecting a 1-run lead in the 7th inning last night, went to Alexi Ogando rather than Koji Uehara, who is coming off a rough spring training.  Hierarchy change: Alexi Ogando to 2nd in line, replacing Koji Uehara.
