Boxberger gets save chance, Petricka will remain closer

August 9, 2014

Tampa Bay Rays – Jake McGee pitched the 8th inning last night with a one run lead and the Rays went to Brad Boxberger for the save in the 9th.  Boxberger wasn’t able to convert the save, as he allowed a run for the first time since June 27th.  The Rays scored a run in the top of the 10th, and again they sent Boxberger out there to protect a one run lead.  This time he threw a perfect inning to finish the game.  McGee is still the closer but it looks like Boxberger could still see an occasional save chance.

Hierarchy remains: McGee | Boxberger | Balfour.

Chicago White Sox – Although Zach Putnam and Jake Petricka were splitting saves prior to Putnam going on the DL, manager Robin Ventura has said that Petricka will remain the primary closer even though Putnam has returned from his injury.

Hierarchy remains: Petricka | Putnam | Belisario.

St. Louis Cardinals – Jason Motte has been placed on the DL with lower back tightness.  Lefty Kevin Siegrist should see some more time in the 7th and 8th innings while Motte is out.

Updated hierarchy: Rosenthal | Neshek | Siegrist.

Pittsburgh Pirates – The Pirates have seen enough of Ernesto Frieri and designated him for assignment yesterday.  It’s possible that Frieri could catch on somewhere else but it’s more likely that Frieri’s days as being a relevant part of a team’s bullpen are over.

Hierarchy remains: Melancon | Watson | Hughes.
