Mike Mayers continues impressive run; Gabe Kapler continues to confound

September 7, 2020

Detroit Tigers – With the Tigers’ top three relievers getting the day off, Bryan Garcia got the 9th on Sunday, converting for his first career save. Garcia is giving off some serious Danny Kolb 2004 vibes, as he’s got a 7/5 K/BB ratio through 16 innings so far but somehow is rocking a minuscule 1.69 ERA. Still, with the Detroit bullpen in flux, we’ll watch to see if this turns into anything more than a one-off chance.

Hierarchy remains: *Soto | Cisnero | Farmer.
* = closer-by-committee

San Francisco Giants – We thought the Giants bullpen might be falling into an order that made sense, but yesterday, Tyler Rogers and his 6.00 ERA got the 9th after Tony Watson pitched the 8th. Kapler’s gonna Kapler.

Hierarchy remains: *Watson | Rogers | Coonrod.
* = closer-by-committee

Los Angeles Angels – Mike Mayers pitched the 8th in a tie game on Sunday, picking up the win when the Angels took the lead. The 28-year-old righty has put together a dominant run since late July, having allowed only 1 earned run in his last 16 appearances.

Updated hierarchy: *Buttrey | Pena | Mayers.
* = closer-by-committee

Toronto Blue Jays – Rafael Dolis got the save last night, as Anthony Bass was off, having pitched two of three. But you’re an avid Vulture Save Watch reader, so you already knew that. Right?

Hierarchy remains: *Bass | Dolis | Cole.
* = closer-by-committee

Texas Rangers – The Rangers placed Joely Rodriguez on the IL yesterday. If you’re in a 75-team league with holds as a category, maybe consider Brett Martin.

Updated hierarchy: Montero | Hernandez | Martin.
