Carlos Estevez losing grip on ninth inning in Colorado

August 9, 2016

Colorado Rockies — This might be the last straw for Carlos Estevez’s job as the Rockies’ closer. Following a couple of miserable outings last week, Estevez melted down last night at Coors Field, coughing up three runs in one-third of an inning for his fifth blown save of the year. After the game, Walt Weiss said he was “not going to talk about roles after the game.” When he does talk about roles, especially whether Adam Ottavino will step in as closer, we’ll let you know.

Hierarchy remains: Estevez | Ottavino | Logan.

Seattle Mariners – A few days ago, the Pirates traded flamethrower Arquimedes Caminero to the Mariners. Yesterday, the Mariners called up Caminero from Triple-A and he was immediately put into a high-leverage spot last night in the 8th inning. The Mariners seem keen on Caminero helping them down the stretch, so we will add him to our hierarchy. Sorry, Drew Storen.

Updated hierarchy: Diaz | Wilhelmsen | Caminero.

Atlanta Braves — Chris Withrow has been placed on the 15-day DL with elbow pain. While his timetable is unclear, we expect Ian Krol to get more late-inning opportunities while Withrow is out.

Updated hierarchy: Johnson | Cabrera | Krol.

Texas Rangers – It was another banner night for the Vulture Save Watch, as Jake Diekman closed the door on the Rangers’ come-from-behind win. Thanks to Carlos Estevez for the assist!

Hierarchy remains: Dyson | Jeffress | Diekman.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
1. Kyle Barraclough, Miami Marlins -With A.J. Ramos still nursing a sore thumb and Old Man Fernando Rodney having pitched a ton in the last week, Barraclough might get the nod tonight.
2. Mauricio Cabrera, Atlanta Braves – Jim Johnson has thrown 24 pitches over the last two days.
3. Raisel Iglesias, Cincinnati Reds – Tony Cingrani had a rough 25-pitch outing last night, so Iglesias may get a look in an always-volatile Reds ‘pen.
