A Rare Royal Vulture Save

September 16, 2023
Philadelphia Phillies – Craig Kimbrel took the 8th inning last night, and after 2 quick outs he walked the bases loaded before escaping without giving up a run. This left the save to Jose Alvarado, who also loaded the bases (and gave up a run) before getting a strikeout to end the game and pick up his 8th save on the year. Kimbrel has been solid in September so there’s no reason to think he’s losing his grip on the closers role right now, but the Phillies have been using him as a high leverage reliever and as they fight for a wildcard spot don’t be surprised to see Alvarado vulture a few more save chances down the stretch.

Hierarchy remains: Kimbrel | Alvarado | Dominguez.

Kansas City Royals – With a 2 run lead and the 3-4-5 hitters coming up the Royals went with Carlos Hernandez in the 8th inning. This left the 9th to Taylor Clarke, who gave up a leadoff homer before striking out the side to earn his first save on the season. Kansas City only has 21 saves total on the year, so don’t expect too much more out of this bullpen with only a couple weeks left.

Hierarchy remains: *Hernandez | Clarke | Cruz.
* = closer-by-committee
