Matt Wisler vultures a save; Zack Britton returns

September 2, 2020

Minnesota Twins – Matt Wisler was the starter in his last three appearances, so naturally he picked up his first save since 2016 on Tuesday in a 3-2 win. Sergio Romo faced the 2-3-4 hitters in the eighth inning while Taylor Rogers (33 pitches) and Trevor May (25 pitches) both got some rest after lengthy outings on Monday. Opponents are hitting just .138 against Wisler, who sports a 1.08 ERA and 21 strikeouts through 16.2 IP, though he has issued 10 walks. We’ll keep an eye on him in case he continues to see high-leverage spots.

Hierarchy remains: *Rogers | Romo | May.
* = closer-by-committee

New York Yankees – Zack Britton was activated off the IL on Tuesday and immediately returned to his usual eighth-inning role, recording a strikeout in a 1-2-3 frame to preserve a 5-3 lead.

Updated hierarchy: Chapman | Britton | Ottavino.

Cincinnati Reds – David Bell confirmed that Raisel Iglesias will remain the Reds’ closer and that newly acquired Archie Bradley will be next in line if Iglesias is unavailable.

Hierarchy remains: Iglesias | Bradley | Jones.

Boston Red Sox — Ryan Weber started Tuesday’s game, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of work. The Red Sox, when not bragging about the luxury tax resetting, are resorting to starting guys like this, so we expect Weber to get another turn in the rotation. We’ll slide Austin Brice into the hierarchy for now. Also of note is that the Sox won’t be overextending any relievers who could serve a purpose next season. We apologize for even wasting your time with an update on this team.

Updated hierarchy: Barnes | Brasier | Brice.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
Tomorrow

1. Ryan Brasier – Matt Barnes may serve a purpose next season, so if he pitches today he may get tomorrow off.
2. Josh Staumont – If Greg Holland pitches today that will be four of five.
