Colorado Rockies — Pierce Johnson was given a save chance with a one-run lead and he blew it, giving up three runs on two walks and two hits. He three 30 pitches in the ugly outing, which inflated his ERA to 7.50. After the game, manager Bud Black said he would “address” the closer situation. We’ve already taken Johnson out of the role and we have to imagine Black is intending to do the same. We’ll slide Johnson down in anticipation that a committee led by Justin Lawrence will take over. Keep an eye on Daniel Bard and Brad Hand, too.
Updated hierarchy: *Lawrence | Bard | Johnson.
* = closer-by-committee
Philadelphia Phillies – Jose Alvarado is slated to return Friday and we’ll slot him in accordingly. He’ll likely compete for saves but Craig Kimbrel has been better as of late (1 ER in 4 IP with two saves and win in June).
Updated hierarchy: Kimbrel | Alvarado | Dominguez.
New York Yankees – Michael King allowed two runs across two innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader Thursday to take the blown save and loss. In Game 2, Clay Holmes tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save, as projected by the Vulture Save Watch. Holmes has three of New York’s past four saves as this bullpen situation continues to be murky.
Hierarchy remains: *King | Holmes | Peralta.
* = closer-by-committee
Chicago White Sox – In Game 1 of a doubleheader Thursday, Kendall Graveman secured his sixth save, an outcome predicted by the Vulture Save Watch. Liam Hendriks did not appear in either game as it appears he is being eased back. It’s also possible he would have been used if Chicago had a late-inning lead in the nightcap.
Hierarchy remains: *Hendriks | Graveman | Kelly.
* = closer-by-committee
Detroit Tigers – Alex Lange was rocked Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk to blow the save and take his second loss. He has allowed six earned runs in two appearances this week to raise his ERA from 1.11 to 3.20.
Hierarchy remains: Lange | Foley | Cisnero.
