Forced into another extended outing, Jacob Latz took over with two runners on and two outs, protecting a two-run lead. He induced an inning-ending groundout by Jarren Duran, thwarting the threat. Returning for the ninth, he retired the side with two strikeouts sandwiched around a pop-out, locking down his 11th save. He threw 24 pitches (62.5 Strike%) and produced two whiffs.

He has converted his last six save opportunities, four requiring at least four outs, posting a 0.62 WHIP with 14 strikeouts against two walks (35.3 K-BB%) through 9.2 innings.
He also tied Mason Miller for the most saves requiring at least four outs, with five. It’s an intriguing case of divergent approaches at closer. Miller racks up strikeouts while reaching triple digits, whereas Latz allows more contact and relies on his command. The good news is that he’s already recorded more saves than any Texas reliever last season, when the team only converted 37 of 66 save opportunities as defined by Baseball Reference.
Three Takeaways
Traction in Seattle: Appearing in a lopsided loss, Andrés Muñoz faced two batters, walking Jorbit Vivas and allowing an RBI double by Jacob Young. He summoned the training staff and departed after throwing nine pitches (55.6 Strike%). He has allowed multiple runs in two of his last three outings and at least a run in four of his last six. As this note from MLB.com by Daniel Kramer intimates, he pitched through a back issue in 2024:

It’s tough weighing his outcomes versus his expected ones, though his xERA is above four this season. Expanding our results, his WHIP has been an issue over the last statistical year:

What we cannot know is how this injury will affect his outcomes and command moving forward. Will favoring his back cause a shoulder issue? His four-seam has been suspect all season. If this continues, will it force the team into a tough decision regarding his role?
Angels adjusted hierarchy: An impromptu bullpen game was going well until Sam Bachman had an inning he’d like to forget at the top of the eighth. Not only did his 12-game scoreless streak end, but his outing also began with a leadoff walk, followed by a two-run home run by Junior Caminero, resulting in his first loss. He finished with four hits, two of which were home runs, five earned runs, and two walks while striking out one. Ryan Zeferjahn tossed a clean top of the ninth, striking out one. There were intimations that Bachman could emerge as the preferred save share. However, this game indicates Zeferjahn will get another chance at saves, though Yates could pitch his way back into them. Given the Angels have the fewest saves in baseball this year, mining them from elsewhere for fantasy.
Updated Hierarchy: Ryan Zeferjahn | Sam Bachman | Chase Silseth
Cardinals overhaul? Summoned with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, George Soriano only let one runner score on a Royce Lewis single, then recorded a strikeout and an inning-ending flyout. With his bullpen running on fumes, he returned for the eighth, and after retiring the first two batters, the wheels came off the bus. He gave up back-to-back doubles, including the go-ahead RBI by Ryan Kreidler, before striking out Byron Buxton, resulting in his first loss and third blown save. He threw 34 pitches (25 strikes – 68.6 Strike%) and produced nine whiffs (25.7 SwStr%). JoJo Romero was credited with his 17th hold despite giving up three hits, two earned runs, and a walk during one-third of the seventh.
During the team’s road trip, all three losses were one-run games, putting a strain on the bullpen. Could reinforcements help? Derrick Goold provided some intriguing names, understanding the team may be moving relievers before the trade deadline:

For now, it’s status quo, but fantasy players, especially ones in keeper leagues should monitor how roles in this bullpen evolve.
Hierarchy Remains: Riley O’Brien | JoJo Romero | George Soriano
