Pete Fairbanks appears for first time in 2022; Jose Alvarado turning heads for Phillies

July 18, 2022

Tampa Bay Rays — Pete Fairbanks has made his return for Tampa, appearing in his first game of 2022 on Sunday. He entered in the eighth inning with a three-run lead against the Orioles and allowed a run. Jason Adam took the ball in the ninth and converted for his fourth save. Fairbanks was a regular in the Rays hierarchy last year and could poke his way through this crowded field this year, for sure. But for now, this wild committee will stay as is, as we head into the break.

Hierarchy remains: *Poche | Adam | Raley.
* = closer-by-committee

Philadelphia Phillies – Jose Alvarado is on fire. He finished the final two outs with two men on Sunday, in relief of Aaron Nola, to record his first save of the year. Alvarado last allowed an earned run June 12, when his season ERA was 8.36. He’s now at 4.39 after 12.2 scoreless innings and deserves recognition in this hierarchy. Corey Knebel last pitched July 12, so he was likely available but was not used Sunday.

Updated hierarchy: *Dominguez | Hand | Alvarado.
* = closer-by-committee
