Thompson earns save in Major League Debut, Feyereisen hits the IL

June 4, 2022
Tampa Bay Rays — The day after running running his scoreless appearance streak to 22 game, J.P. Feyereisen was placed on the IL with a right shoulder impingement. Feyereisen has been flawless on the season, maintaining a 0.00 ERA through 24.1 innings, and even snagging a pair of starts along the way, so hopefully he will be back soon. In better news, Colin Poche got his 3rd save of the season last night, coming on for the last out with the bases loaded and striking out Luis Robert. This being Tampa, anybody is in line for saves, but Jason Adam, who picked up a hold on Thursday, looks ready to handle some late inning duties.

Updated Hierarchy: *Poche | Raley | Adam
* = closer-by-committee

St. Louis Cardinals — Former first round pick Zack Thompson made his major league debut last night, getting the ball in the 6th inning with an 8 run lead. He scattered 3 hits and 1 run over the next 4 innings to earn a save in his first major league appearance. Thompson projects as a starter, so it is unlikely he gets many more save chances on the year, but earning a save in his first appearance is a solid start to his career.

Hierarchy remains: *Helsley | Gallegos | Cabrera.
* = closer-by-committee

Los Angeles Dodgers —  Daniel Hudson entered the 8th inning with the tying run on deck. He got the last out of the 8th, stranding 2 runners, and then stuck around for the 9th after the Dodgers pushed their lead to 5 to earn his 4th save on the year. Craig Kimbrel pitched a clean inning on Thursday, so there’s no reason to think that this was anything other than a situational save for Hudson, and Kimbrel should be ready to go this weekend.

Hierarchy remains: Kimbrel | Hudson | Graterol.

Vulture Save Watch:

  1. Jhoan Duran (MIN) – Emilio Pagan will not pitch this weekend.
  2. Andres Munoz/Diego Castillo (SEA) – Paul Sewald has pitched in back to back games and thrown 53 pitches in that span, he will likely need a rest today.
  3. Alex Colome/Carlos Estevez (COL) — The entire Colorado hierarchy could use a rest, but Daniel Bard has thrown 66 pitches over the past 3 days, and will likely get the first day off.
  4. Rowan Wick/Mychal Givens (CHC) – Chicago plays a doubleheader …
  5. Giovanny Gallegos (STL) … against the Cardinals.

For Sunday:

  1. Jhoan Duran (MIN) – Emilio Pagan will not pitch this weekend.
  2. Trevor Stephan (CLE) – Today would be back to back and 3 of 4 for Emmanuel Clase.
