Joe Nathan blows save, Soria leaves with injury

August 10, 2014

Detroit Tigers – Joe Nathan blew his sixth save of the season yesterday.  He was only able to record one out and was pulled with the bases loaded.  Joakim Soria came on and worked out of the bases loaded jam to keep the game tied.  Soria tried to come back out for the tenth inning but was removed with a strain in his left side.  For what seems like the 20th time this season, manager Brad Ausmus said after the game that Joe Nathan is still his closer.  Nathan has been better recently and if Soria is going to miss some time, he could have a longer leash.  However, the Tigers are in a tight race and if Nathan has a few more outings like last night, Ausmus will have to think about Soria.

Hierarchy remains: Nathan | Soria | Chamberlain.

New York Mets – Jeurys Familia recorded his second save of the season last night.  Regular closer Jenrry Mejia has been battling a sore calf muscle and, after pitching through it two nights in a row, he was given the night off on Saturday.

Hierarchy remains: Mejia | Familia | Black.

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
1. Joakim Soria/Joba Chamberlain, Detroit Tigers – Joe Nathan has thrown 54 pitches and will likely be unavailable Sunday.  If Soria is not able to go due to his injured side, then Joba should get the call.
2. Edward Mujica, Boston Red Sox – Koji Uehara has pitched in two straight and three of the last four.
3. Bryan Morris, Miami Marlins – Steve Cishek has pitched in three straight.
