Tom Wilhelmsen on verge of winning job back; Blake Parker worth stashing

July 3, 2013

Seattle Mariners – Eric Wedge said prior to Tuesday’s game that Tom Wilhelmsen was close to regaining his closer status, and that the righty would be given another outing or two in a set-up role, and if those go well, he’d return to his old job (Mariners closer, that is, not bartender).  Wilhelmsen pitched the 9th last night in a 7-run game, throwing a clean inning, and seems to be, at most, one more decent outing away from returning to the role.  It’s sad news for owners of Oliver Perez and Yoervis Medina, who over the past three weeks have picked up a whopping one save each.  No hierarchy change.

Chicago Cubs – Following the trade of Scott Feldman, the Cubs announced that Carlos Villanueva would be headed back to the rotation.  As Kevin Gregg draws interest from other teams, that makes Blake Parker an intriguing sleeper option for saves, come trade deadline time.  He might be worth rostering in deeper leagues.  Hierarchy change: Blake Parker to Set-up, James Russell to 2nd in line.

Arizona Diamondbacks – Kirk Gibson told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that JJ Putz would be used in lower-leverage situations for the time being.  Heath Bell will close for now, with David Hernandez behind him.  Josh Collmenter was also mentioned as a candidate for more late-inning work.  Hierarchy change: Heath Bell to Closer, David Hernandez to Set-up, JJ Putz to 2nd in line.

1. Jim Henderson, Milwaukee Brewers – Ron Roenicke has said that he’ll use Francisco Rodriguez in 9th inning most of the time, but might also go to Jim Henderson based on match ups, and today might be a day where Henderson is especially likely to see a save opp, as K-Rod has thrown a total of 58 pitches over the last three days.

J.J. Putz pulled from closer role, will attempt to regain velocity

Francisco Rodriguez will close… until he gets traded, anyway

July 2, 2013

Milwaukee Brewers – We missed this one yesterday; thanks to a reader for pointing it out: Ron Roenicke said that in most situations, K-Rod will be his closer.  So we’re swapping them in our hierarchy and putting K-Rod on the Hot Seat for the time being, though Henderson should have the job back once K-Rod gets dealt at the deadline, which seems likely at this point.  Hierarchy change: Francisco Rodriguez to Closer, Jim Henderson to Set-up.

Arizona Diamondbacks – J.J. Putz got his first save chance since returning from the DL, and looked shaky, to say the least, blowing the save and nearly taking the loss.  He’ll head to the Hot Seat until he proves he’s back on his game, though the two men behind him haven’t inspired much confidence lately either.  David Hernandez gave up a run in the 8th inning yesterday after getting knocked around for four runs on Saturday; the two outings combined to raise his ERA from 3.60 to 4.71.  Heath Bell, meanwhile, is Heath Bell.  J.J. Putz to Hot Seat.

2. Jim Henderson, Milwaukee Brewers – Ron Roenicke said his closer will be based on match-ups, suggesting that Henderson could get a save on any given night.

Jim Henderson doesn’t have a firm grip on his job; Brandon Lyon getting shelled

June 1, 2013

New York Mets – A few days ago, Brandon Lyon was in line to get any Mets save opportunities on nights Bobby Parnell was unavailable, but two horrendous outings against the Nationals may have dropped him off the hierarchy altogether.  On Friday, Lyon gave up a game-tying three-run double, and on Sunday, he gave up 6 earned runs in just 0.2 innings.  David Aardsma has been pitching well (1.80 ERA), but despite his recent closing experience, he hasn’t seized the set-up role yet.  For the time being, non-Parnell save opps will likely go to LaTroy Hawkins, who pitched the 9th in a four-run Mets win on Saturday.  Hierarchy change: LaTroy Hawkins to Set-up, replacing Brandon Lyon.

Milwaukee Brewers – A week after Ron Roenicke insisted that Jim Henderson was his closer, Sunday’s game provided some evidence to the contrary.  Henderson pitched the 8th inning, allowing a run and blowing the save in the process, while Francisco Rodriguez was held out of the game entirely until the 13th, seeming to fulfill the classically stupid (but conventionally accepted) theory that you don’t use your closer in a tie game on the road.  K-Rod eventually took the loss in the 14th.  The Brewers haven’t been winning much, making it hard for them to establish a clear hierarchy, but Henderson’s usage has been very un-closerlike this week.  After not working for four days, he pitched the 8th inning on Thursday.  Then he got the 8th again on Saturday, in a game the Brewers were losing.  Then came last night, when he was very clearly being used as a set-up man.  It’s possible that the Brewers are just juicing up K-Rod’s trade value, but either way, the next save opp in Milwaukee will hopefully provide some additional clarity.  No hierarchy change.

(UPDATE: We missed this one this morning; thanks to a reader for pointing it out: Ron Roenicke said that in most situations, K-Rod will be his closer.  So we’re swapping them in our hierarchy and putting K-Rod on the Hot Seat for the time being.)
