Rowan Wick to lead Cubs committee in David Robertson’s absence

May 10, 2022

Cleveland Guardians – Trevor Stephan picked up the 11th inning save on Monday. Emmanuel Clase was assessed the harsh blown save after allowing the uninherited runner on 2nd to score in the 10th, but he at least got a win out of the deal and remains the clear top option in Cleveland.

Hierarchy remains: Clase | Stephan | Gose.

Oakland A’s – If Dany Jimenez keeps putting up zeroes — as he did yesterday in earning the save in a 2-0 Oakland win — there’s no reason that the A’s need to shift back to Lou Trivino (10.80 ERA, 2.40 WHIP) any time soon. We’ll leave the asterisk up for one more save, but this could be Jimenez’s job any day now.

Hierarchy remains: *Jimenez | Trivino | Acevedo.
* = closer-by-committee

Miami Marlins – Dylan Floro was activated from the IL before the game on Monday night, and the fact that he didn’t appear in the 4-3 loss is enough to suggest that he’s already very close to the top of this hierarchy. We’ll slot him second for now and see how the Marlins deploy him going forward.

Updated hierarchy: *Bender | Floro | Sulser.
* = closer-by-committee

Chicago Cubs – The Cubs on Sunday placed David Robertson on the injured list (no injury designation). This is likely a COVID situation. Those situations can take weeks or just one day, depending if there was a positive test. But for now, assume closing duties are going to a committee led by Rowan Wick, who has been very good this season (0.93 ERA, 12 Ks in 11.2 IP).

Updated hierarchy: *Wick | Givens | Martin.
* = closer-by-committee

2. Dillon Tate – Jorge Lopez has gone back to back (53 pitches).
3. Lou Trivino/Domingo Acevedo/Michael Fulmer/Andrew Chafin – The A’s and Tigers have a doubleheader, and the A’s may go especially deep for save chances, as Dany Jimenez has already pitched two straight.

2. Chris Stratton – If David Bednar goes today, it’s back to back and three of four.
3. Kendall Graveman – If Liam Hendriks goes today, it’s back to back and four of five.
